Wear Your Grad Gown Proudly & Properly: Putting On Your Gown, Cap & Tassel

No matter which school level it is that you are graduating from, it is essential to look your best during one of the biggest days in your academic life. There used to be a time when graduation ceremonies were only celebrated by high school and college students. Over the years, however, teachers have recognized the effort that it takes for young children to skip playtime and go to school. As such, even the preschool, kindergarten, middle school and elementary school students have begun holding formal graduation rites.

Now, how are you supposed to look your best during your graduation day? It all boils down to the outfit that you are going to wear. As far back as the 13th and 14th centuries, the long, flowing black robe were already being used by clergymen for formal gatherings. After some time, certain rules were imposed to standardize the way that the academic ensemble is made and worn so that they are the same no matter which part of the world it is that students are from.

When putting together your graduation ensemble, it is important to know the components which will complete it. There’s the grad gown to begin with which should be paired with a graduation cap that is decorated with graduation tassels. For college students, the typical color is black while students who are on a lower school level have different color requirements. The hues of their graduation gowns are usually based on the colors of their school flag. For college students, the color of the graduation stole is based on the field of study that they finished.

How to Wear Your Graduation Cap Properly

You basically have two options on how you can get a hold of a complete academic ensemble. Your first option is to rent what you need from a specialty store in your area. Ask the school registrar if they are working with a supplier from whom you can rent the graduation gown, cap and accessories. If they are working with a supplier, you just need to have your measurements taken. On the other hand, you can also buy the gown and accessories that you need online.

More importantly, how are you supposed to wear your graduation cap properly? Whether it’s rented or bought, there are a few rules that need to be followed when wearing your graduation cap with tassel:
·         Make sure that the cap is properly worn. The top of the cap should be worn at a mortarboard level and not tilted to one side of the head.
·         The string of the graduation tassels should be looped around the middle of the cap. The tassels are usually made from cotton, silk, rayon or poplin and the strings should hang over the right or left temple. The students can either switch the tassels from one side to another all at the same time, or right after receiving the diploma.

Your graduation day is indeed one of the most important days in your academic life. As such, make sure that you look your best during the ceremony and see to it that you are wearing the accessories properly.
